According to a new study, the most lucrative tech jobs vary greatly from one state to another.
DataCamp, an AI-based education platform, analyzed salary information published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics for 2023 to determine the top tech positions with the highest average salaries by state. New Jersey had the best-paying role as database architect with an annual average of $158,930. However, New York’s neighbor was the software developer with an annual average of $150,020.
Software development was the highest-paying occupation in California as well, with an average salary of $173 780.
“The tech industry is rapidly changing every day, and the diversity in the highest-paid roles across states reflects the different needs and priorities of businesses in various regions,” DataCamp co-founder Martijn Theuwissen stated. “From this, states like California, which are home to many tech startups, are pumping more money into the software development field, likely to increase productivity and quality.”

Database architect was the highest paid job in 19 of those states. Computer network architect was the highest-paying tech role in 15 states, while software developer was the most-compensated job in only 12.
Researchers behind this list warn that jobs listed on the list could change within a few short years.
“As businesses increasingly rely on data-driven solutions and tools, the demand for experts who can maintain these things will also increase, and completely new job titles will likely pop up,” Theuwissen was right.
