In the early years of her career, she was a cardiothoracic anesthesiologist in Queens at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital from 2004-2007. She gained clinical experience prior to her current role as an assistant Professor of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia at NewYork Presbyterian Hospital on the Columbia University Campus, from 1999-2004.
During this period, Dr.
Hussain achieved a significant milestone by developing a menu-driven website for the Columbia-Presbyterian Department of Anesthesiology in 2001– a pioneering effort at a time when such platforms were rare outside of the banking industry. The innovative website provided comprehensive information to anesthesiologists and medical students as well as patients, their families, and the community about the Department. It set new standards for an academic anesthesia websites.
Dr. Hussain’s journey into anesthesiology began with her residency at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital. She then pursued an extramural fellowship with the National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health from 1997-1999, focusing on medical informatics. In reflecting on her journey, Dr.
Hussain explains that she has achieved success not just through rigorous academic training, but also because of formative experiences in her life — such as having heart surgery when she was a young child — and this inspired her to pursue medicine and research. Growing up in New York City, she had access to schools that supported her and mentors to encourage her from middle school to her fellowship and residency. Her progress is largely attributed to the network of support and guidance she had.
In addition to her achievements in the professional world, Dr. Hussain has a strong civic commitment through serving on the admissions committee for Zucker School of medicine at Hofstra University/Northwell Health. She previously served as a board member of the University Gardens Property Owners Association.
To balance her professional commitments, she maintains an active life through activities such as gardening, traveling, tennis and cooking.
She is happily married, a family-oriented woman and the proud mother to three children. Her oldest child works for Microsoft while her second is a medical student.
In the next few years, Dr. Hussain hopes to see her innovations widely adopted in the clinical setting to improve patient care.
This includes the Elliptica Oxygen Mask. She hopes to realize the full potential of her clinical research by using technology advancements like machine learning. This will allow her to broaden her impact and improve outcomes for patients around the globe.
